বাছাই পর্বের ফাইনাল খেলে ১৯৯৬ সালের বিশ্বকাপ খেলার যোগ্যতা অর্জন করা কেনিয়া বিশ্বকাপে ভারতের বিপক্ষে নিজেদের অভিষেক ওয়ানডে ম্যাচ খেলে। ভারতের সাথে ৭ উইকেটের পরাজয়ে শুরু হলেও একই বিশ্বকাপে দুইবারের বিশ্বকাপজয়ী শক্তিশালী উইন্ডিজকে ৭৩ রানের বড় ব্যবধানে হারিয়ে বাজিমাত করে কেনিয়া। কেনিয়ার গড়া ১৬৬ রানের জবাবে মরিস উদুম্বে ও রজব আলীর বোলিং তোপে মাত্র ৯৩ রানে অলআউট হয়েছিল রিচি রিচার্ডসনের নেতৃত্বাধীন তারকা সমৃদ্ধ ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজ।
১৯৯৬ সাল থেকে ২০১১ সাল পর্যন্ত নিয়মিত ৫টি বিশ্বকাপ খেলা কেনিয়া ২০০৩ সালের বিশ্বকাপে আফ্রিকা ও জিম্বাবুয়ের সাথে স্বাগতিক দেশ হিসেবে খেলে। এই বিশ্বকাপে দলটি সেমিফাইনালে খেলে তাক লাগিয়ে দেয়। সেমিফাইনালে ভারতের সাথে হেরে বিদায় নিলেও কেনিয়ার সামর্থ্যরে প্রমাণ দেখেছিল ক্রিকেট বিশ্ব। যদিও গ্রæপ পর্বে নিউজিল্যান্ডের ওয়াকওভারের কারনে কেনিয়া জয় পেয়ে যাওয়া বেশ ভ‚মিকা রেখেছিল তাদের সেমিফাইনালে উঠতে। এছাড়া বাংলাদেশ ও শ্রীলংকাকে হারানোও দারুণ অর্জন ছিলো তাদের।
২০০৭ আর ২০১১ সালের ওয়ানডে বিশ্বকাপ খেললেও ২০১৪ সালের টি২০ ও ২০১৫ বিশ্বকাপ খেলার যোগ্যতা অর্জন করতে না পারায় ২০১৪ সালে ওয়ানডে ও টি২০ খেলার যোগ্যতা হারায় দলটি যাহা ক্রিকেট বিশ্বে হৈচৈ ফেলে দেওয়া দলটির জন্য খুবই লজ্জার।
বাংলাদেশ ৩০০ রানের মাইকফলক ছুয়েছে ২০০৬ সালে এই কেনিয়ার বিরুদ্ধে। আর কেনিয়া ১৯৯৭ সালেই বাংলাদেশের বিরুদ্ধে ৩৪৭ রান করেছিল। সে ম্যাচে সর্বোচ্চ ১৪৪ রান করেন কেনেডি ওটিয়েনো।
দেশের হয়ে ১৩৫ ম্যাচে ১১১ বেস্টে সর্বোচ্চ ৩৩৬৯ রান করেন স্টিভ টিকলো। আর বোলিং এ টমাস ওডোয়ো ১৩৬ ম্যাচে ৪ বেস্টে সর্বোচ্চ ১৪৫ উইকেট লাভ করেন।
অলরাউন্ডার হিসেবে স্টিভ টিকলো ৩৩৬৯ রানের পাশাাপশি ৪ উইকেট বেস্টে সর্বমোট ৯৩ উইকেট লাভ করেন এবং টমাস ওডোয়ো ১১১ বেস্টে ২৪২০ রানের পাশাপাশি ১৪৫ উইকেট লাভ করেন। এছাড়াও দেশের হয়ে কোলিনস ওবোয়ো, কেনেডি ওটিয়েনো, পিটার অনগনডো, রবিন্দ শাহ, নেহেমিয়া ওডিয়েম্বো সহ অনেকেই ব্যাটে বলে ভালো খেলেছেন।
টেস্ট খেলুড়ে দেশের বিরুদ্ধে জয়ের রেকর্ড হিসেবে ইন্ডিয়ার বিরুদ্ধে ২টি, জিম্বাবুয়ের বিরুদ্ধে ৫টি, ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজ ও শ্রীলংকার বিরুদ্ধে ১টি করে, বাংলাদেশের বিরুদ্ধে সর্বোচ্চ ৬টি ম্যাচে জয় লাভ করেন।
প্রথম ওয়ানডে বিশ্বকাপ ১৯৭৫ ও ১৯৭৯ সালে পূর্ব আফ্রিকার অংশ হিসেবে বিশ্বকাপে অংশ নিলেও আলাদা দেশ হিসেবে ১৯৯৬ সালে প্রথম বিশ্বকাপে অংশগ্রহণ করেন।
আইসিসি চ্যাম্পিয়ন ট্রফিতে ২০০০, ২০০২, ২০০৪ সালে নিয়মিত অংশগ্রহণ করেছিলেন।
২০০৭ সালের প্রথম টি২০ বিশ্বকাপে অংশগ্রহণ করলেও তার পর থেকে সর্বশেষ ২০১৪ সালের বিশ্বকাপ পর্যন্ত আর টি২০ বিশ্বকাপ খেলতে পারেননি দলটি।
অর্থনৈতিক ভাবে ততটা সমৃদ্ধশালী না হওয়ায় এবং নিম্নমুখী পারফরম্যান্স এর কারনে দলটি ২০০৭ সালের পর কখনোই মাথাচাড়া দিয়ে উঠতে পারেনি।
যে দেশটি ৫টি টেস্ট খেলুড়ে দেশের সাথে জয়ের রেকর্ড আছে, ৩টি টেস্ট খেলুড়ে দেশের সাথে একাধিক ম্যাচ জেতার রেকর্ড আছে সে দেশটি বর্তমানে বিশ্বকাপ কোয়ালিফায়ার টূর্নামেন্টের ৮/৯ নাম্বার পজিশনে থাকতে হচ্ছে!

আইসিসির সহযোগী দেশ হয়ে ৭টি টেস্ট খেলুড়ে দেশকে লজ্জা দিয়ে যে দেশ এক যুগ আগে তথা ২০০৩ সালেই ৩য় পজিশনে থেকে বিশ্বকাপ শেষ করতে পারে, সে দেশ ২০১৪-১৫ বিশ্বকাপ খেলতে না পারা সহ ওয়ানডে/টি২০ মর্যাদা হারানো নিঃসন্দেহে আইসিসির জন্য লজ্জাজনক বিষয়।
আইসিসি ক্রিকেটের অভিভাবক সংস্থা হিসেবে এ দায় কখনোই এড়াতে পারে না। ক্রিকেটের বিশ্বায়নের যুগে যেখানে অপরিচিত দেশগুলোও ক্রিকেটে ভিড়তে পারছে এবং আফগানিস্তানের মতো যুদ্ধবিধ্বস্থ দেশও ক্রিকেট শক্তি হিসেবে আবির্ভূত হচ্ছে, সেখানে কেনিয়ার এমন অধপতন মেনে নেওয়া অসম্ভব।
২০০৩ এ সেমিফাইনাল খেলা সহ ৩য় পজিশনে থেকে বিশ্বকাপ শেষ করার গৌরব অর্জনের প্রতিদান হিসেবে এবং অভিভাবক হিসেবে আইসিসির উচিত কেনিয়ার ক্রিকেটের উন্নয়নে পাশে দাড়ানো।
ব্যর্থতার চূড়ান্তে নিমজ্জিত হওয়া দলটির ক্রিকেট ভবিষ্যত অন্ধারাচ্ছন্ন। আইসিসি ও প্রভাবশালী বোর্ডদের সহায়তা ছাড়া আলোকিত হওয়ার কোন রাস্তাই তাদের সামনে নেই।

২০০৬/০৭ সালের দিকে বাংলাদেশ দল যখন কেনিয়ার সাথে সিরিজ খেলতো এবং কেনিয়াকে হোয়াইটওয়াশ করতো, তখন অনেক মজা পেতাম এই ভেবে যে, এই কেনিয়ার সাথেই একসময় হেরেছে বাংলাদেশ, এখন তার প্রতিশোধ নিচ্ছে। সেই থেকেই পিছিয়ে যাওয়া কেনিয়া ২০১১ সালের বিশ্বকাপ খেলার পর আর টিকে থাকতে পারেনি ওয়ানডে ক্রিকেটে। বিশ্ব ক্রিকেট যেখানে এগিয়ে যাচ্ছে, সেখানে ক্রিকেট কেনিয়ার হারিয়ে যাওয়া দুঃখজনক বিষয় ছাড়া কিছু নয়।
ক্রিকেট কেনিয়ার সবচেয়ে বড় তারকা স্টিভ টিকলো ও সমসাময়িক ক্রিকেটাররা বিদায় নেয়ার সাথে সাথে যেনো ক্রিকেট কেনিয়ার সুদিনও বিদায় নিয়েছে।
